Bay checkerspot Euphydryas editha bayensis

The Bay Checkerspot is listed as endangered under US federal law. It is one of the most studied butterflies in the world. One of the most famous colonies used to exist adjacent to the campus of Stanford University. It is one of the world's rarest butterflies only around a half dozen colonies remain.
